Here's some of the story as amassed in the WIKIPEDIA article about the rock-pop phenom : He performed with rock bands during his time in high school at local venues, opening for future guitarist Brian Craddock's band My Dog Lucy and Matt Jagger. Musical influences include bands like Creed, Bush, Live, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Fuel.[4][5][6] During high school, he appeared in two stage productions: The Wiz and Peter Pan. For his first official performance, he sang "Achy Breaky Heart " at his grandfather's bar. Daughtry graduated from Fluvanna High School in 1998. Daughtry was working as a Service Advisor at Crown Honda, a car dealership in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the time he auditioned for American Idol. Yes, American Idol definitely boosted his mainstream career. He didn't win American Idol. but without making it to the top 12, he would have gone unnoticed. He owes his career to AI because of the recognition it gave him.

No -- he already had years of singing and fronting bands before the 2006 weeks in January - May; he was even offered jobs WHILE he was on the stage although he had NOT advanced in the CBS-TV search for the INXS lead singer. . .
