Question: How did whoopi goldberg make her first big break into television and film?

First time I saw her was on HBO doing a 1 woman stage show with several characters about 1983-84, then she did a few comedy movies like Jumpin Jack Flash and Burglar... I think Ghost (Oscar win) made her more a "household name " and she did all of those HBO comedy "Feed the Homeless " telethons with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal in early 90's. A whole bunch of stand ups made it big in the late 80's and early 90's..now not so much She was one of those stand up acts who caught lightning in a bottle...for every Whoopi, Seinfeld, Eddie and Leno...there are a 50 more you never here from.
